ACT Concepts

Coherence in Action

In his book Good Strategy, Bad Strategy , The difference and why it matters, Richard Rumelt laid out some subtleties about coherence in action.

  • Together with the diagnosis and guiding policies, a coherent set of actions form the kernel of the strategy

  • Actions should be coordinated with one another to work together in accomplishing the guiding policy

  • Strategy does not need to point to all the actions that will be taken as events unfold, but there must be enough clarity about action to bring concepts down to earth

  • Resource deployments, policies, and maneuvers that are undertaken should be consistent and coordinated. The coordination of action provides the most basic source of leverage or advantage available in strategy
